On a momentous occasion at Vigyan Bhawan, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) joined forces to commemorate Legal Services Day, unveiling initiatives that mark a significant leap forward in justice, legal awareness, and empowerment of people, specifically women across India.
Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, lauded NALSA and NCW for catalyzing a paradigm shift in the accessibility of law and justice within communities. He praised the work done by the NALSA and NCW with the words “The real worth of the work done by the two flagship missions of our nation NALSA and NCW is to take the reach of justice to the doorstep of our people.” Emphasizing women’s empowerment, he asserted that the worth of a family is measured by the value ascribed to its women, urging everyone to accord women their due recognition.
The upgraded National Helpline Number 15100 of NALSA as explained by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul added a robust dimension to immediate legal assistance for citizens through a real-time monitored multilingual Legal Assistance Helpline covering all the District Legal Services Authorities of the country. The launch event also witnessed the inauguration of “Vidhaan se Samadhaan,” a legal awareness program targeting women at the block level, which plans to cover all states and union territories within 1.5 years, aligning with NALSA’s and NCW’s commitment to justice and empowerment for every woman.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge Supreme Court, and Chairman of Supreme Court Legal Services, underscored the importance of legal literacy clubs in schools and improvements in shelter homes for enhancing legal awareness.
On this significant day, the “Her Legal Guide” app was unveiled, showcasing a commitment to digital empowerment aligned with the principles of Digital India and women-led development initiatives.
The Minister of State for Law and Justice, Sh. Arjun Ram Meghwal emphasized that India has immense potential to be a Global Leader as exhibited by its endeavors in the field of Yoga, Ayurveda, and Space, and there is no reason which prohibits the nation from becoming a Global Leader in the domain of Legal Aid and Access to Justice. He lauded the combined efforts of NALSA and NCW to ensure that no woman is denied justice due to socioeconomic conditions.
Chairperson NCW highlighted the transformative power of digitalization with the “Her Legal Guide” app, putting information about legal rights directly into the hands of women with their smartphones.
The event was graced by dignitaries from across the country, recognizing the collaborative efforts towards legal empowerment. This joint initiative underscores the unwavering commitment of NALSA and NCW to ensuring justice, legal awareness, and empowerment of all citizens of India.
